About us

DS Asphalt

A small asphalt outfit working out of Frederick, with more than twenty years of paving behind it.

Who you are dealing with

A small crew, not a call centre

DS Asphalt is a small, owner-run paving company based in Frederick. Derek runs the work and is usually the person who comes out to look at your driveway, which is the main practical difference between us and a large contractor: the person quoting the job is the person responsible for it, so there is nothing lost between the estimate and the crew.

The experience behind it runs to more than twenty years of asphalt work, residential and commercial, and the range of jobs reflects that — a single-car driveway and a ten-thousand-square-foot one with a dozen separate problems on it are both normal weeks.

We work across Frederick County and the surrounding region, and further into Maryland and Virginia for larger jobs.

How we work

Three things we try to get right

Tell you what you need

Including when that is less than you were expecting. Sealing a driveway that is not ready, or replacing one that only needs an overlay, are both easy sales and both wrong.

Answer the phone

The most common thing customers say about us is that we came back to them. In a trade where people routinely cannot get a contractor to return a call, that is a low bar we take seriously.

Make the price workable

Estimates are free and there is financing available, because a driveway usually fails on its own schedule rather than yours.

The work itself

Why we go on about the base so much

If you read much of this site you will notice the same theme repeatedly: what happens under the surface decides everything. That is not a sales angle, it is just where asphalt jobs go wrong. Pavement laid on a base that was not compacted properly, or graded so water sits on it, will fail no matter how good the surface looked on day one — and it will usually fail after whoever laid it has moved on.

The flip side is the part that saves people money. A driveway whose base is still sound does not need replacing, however tired the top looks, and recommending a full tear-out on one of those is the most expensive mistake in the trade. Getting that call right is most of what we are being paid for.

If you want a second opinion on something you have already been quoted for, that is a perfectly good reason to call us. We will look at it and tell you what we see.
